Poet Soin Nishiyama influenced Basho Matsuo in his younger days. His jaunty, humorous verses earned him acclaim in the early Edo period as the founder of the Danrin school. He opened Koeian, his own private school near Temmangu Shrine, training students such as Saikaku Ihara.
