“The Love Suicides at Sonezaki” starts with Ohatsu on a pilgrimage of the 33 Kannon sites in Osaka. This is the first of the sites. Built in 821 by Kobo Daishi, the name Taiyuji Temple is said to come from the story that Minamoto no Toru, who served as the inspiration for the Tale of Genji, maintained the temple according to the will of his father Emperor Saga. Although it was burned down in the Siege of Osaka, it was later rebuilt. The grave of Yodo-dono, Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s concubine, was built on the temple grounds, and each year on May 8, a Buddhist ceremony is held to commemorate the death of Yodo-dono by her own hands when Osaka Castle fell.

The six-story stone pagoda is the grave of Yodo-dono. It stands, nestled in a quiet corner of the temple grounds.
