Remembering the history of a village that sank during restoration work on the Yodogawa River

Juso Monument at Tomishima Shrine
2-5-10 Nakatsu , Kita-ku, Osaka
Always open to visitors

Tomishima Shrine was built during the Ashikaga period and during the Edo period, serving as the guardian deity of Nakatsu and Juso. Sagishima Shrine, which was located in Narushoji, a village that sank during the restoration work on the Yodogawa River, was merged with Tomishima Shrine. On the grounds stands a monument that commemorates Juso of long ago. The porcelain frogs nearby have been stolen and returned many times, giving them the nickname "Buji Kaeru,” which can also mean “safe return” in Japanese, making them symbols of good luck.

Cute, humorous porcelain frogs.
