Home to historic storehouses, Sugaharacho was once a lively spot where wholesalers handled dry goods. These were once sold alongside the fruits and vegetables of the Temma Fruit and Vegetable Market, but with more wholesalers dealing only in dry goods, they began to congregate in Sugaharacho in the Edo period. During its heyday in the Taisho era, there were more than 200 storehouses selling kelp, dried shiitake mushrooms, dried roasted seaweed, frozen tofu, dried gourd, and agar.
