Peek into the lively history of Nakanoshima and its many ancient warehouses

Funairibashi Bridge Monument
2-1-18 Nishitemma , Kita-ku, Osaka

During the Edo period, when cargo was mainly conveyed by riverboat, there was a large bridge spanning the moat on the grounds of the domain warehouses in Nakanoshima, and it was used to carry cargo directly from the boats. The bridge measured about 7 to 15 meters long, and on the spot of this monument is where the warehouses of the Nabeshima (Saga) domain once stood. Koharu and Jihei, from Chikamatsu Monzaemon’s drama “The Love Suicides at Amijima,” crossed Funairibashi Bridge, then Tenjinbashi Bridge and headed toward Amijima (current day Miyakojima-ku) where they ended their lives.
