Late in the Edo period, Temma was the foremost glass production site in Japan thanks to glass artisan Harimaya Seibei from Nagasaki who began producing glass near Temmangu Shrine. Glass production waned after the Second World War when factories moved out of the neighborhood, but the craft was revived in 2000 when glass artisans passed down the Satsuma Kiriko technique, resulting in Temma Kiriko being sold here. This new type of glass is now a popular Osaka product.
