This shrine in Umeda is the only one in the country that venerates Emperor Saga as its principal deity. It was built in 843 by Prince Minamoto no Toru. Legend has it that 58 years later, while Sugawara no Michizane was on the road after being demoted from Kyoto to Dazaifu, he was lured by the scent of a plum tree and spread his boat ropes out in a circle where he gazed at the red plum blossoms, giving it the name Tsunashiki Tenjin Shrine (“tsunashiki” meaning spread ropes). Chayamachi is home to a resting place of the deity of Tsunashiki Tenjin Shrine, and Kakudacho is where you’ll find the Ha Shrine of Tsunashiki Tenjin Shrine. Long ago, it was known as Kitano Tenjin, and the name of the area came to be called Kitano thereafter.
