The teahouse where Ohatsu, the heroine of Chikamatsu Monzaemon’s tragic love story, “The Love Suicides at Sonezaki,” worked, was located near here. When heading to end her life with her love, Tokubei, they crossed Umedabashi Bridge and disappeared into Tenjin Forest. In the bunraku drama of their story, the bridge symbolized the link to the afterlife. At the time, Umedabashi Bridge led to the Umeda Graveyard on the north side, and it was the oldest bridge in the area on the approach to the cemetery. Although there is no monument, the name lives on in the nearby Umedabashi Building.
