The first place in Japan to craft Western paper

The birthplace of modern papermaking
5-3-20 Nakanoshima , Kita-ku, Osaka

This factory was built on the site of the Kumamoto domain’s warehouse in the early Meiji period and was the first Western paper factory in the country and began when Osaka merchant Hiranoya Gohei bought a Western paper making machine in England. The company name changed many times throughout the years, but the factory remained on this spot until World War II. Hiranoya was one of the most powerful moneychangers at the time.
