This shrine is popularly known as Daini Yasaka Shrine because of the old name of the area, Daini. The name comes from Wani, a teacher who came from Baekje on the Korean Peninsula and dedicated a poem to Emperor Nintoku. Even the Chayamachi area was dedicated to the shrine during the Meiji period, and many people came for the New Year’s visit to the shrine from teahouses by rickshaw. The reason why the “saka” character in Yasaka Shrine differs from those across the rest of Japan is because of a clerical error when the characters used to write Osaka were changed.

Teacher Wani, who brought Chinese characters and Confucianism to Japan. He also composed a song familiar to competitive karuta card game fans. Legend has it that his grave is located at Yasaka Shrine.
