This tooth shrine is a rarity in Japan. Although it was originally a local Inari shrine, the large stone which is the shrine’s object of worship prevented a flood when the Yodogawa River overflowed during the mid-Edo period, resulting in it being called the God of Hadome. “Ha” can also mean tooth in Japanese, which is why it later became known as the Tooth Shrine. After the annual ritual on June 4th, 100 toothbrushes donated by a toothbrush manufacturer are given to the first 100 people to visit the shrine.
