Bando Yamagata was one of the foremost commoner academics of the Edo period. He studied at Kaitokudo while working as a pawn shop clerk, becoming an expert in Confucianism, astronomy, and Dutch studies. He maintained the spirit of a true Osakan in his studies, developing free and rational thinking capabilities.
