The massive grain of rice monument was erected in 2018

The grain of rice monument at the Dojima Rice Exchange site
1-3 Dojimahama (Northeast side of Nakanoshima Garden Bridge) , Kita-ku, Osaka

This monument shaped like a massive grain of rice was built in 2018 on the grounds of the Dojima Rice Exchange in collaboration with architect Tadao Ando. It is a symbol of the exchange, which was one of the world’s first examples of futures trading. The exchange originated with the rice trade started by the wealthy Edo period merchant Yodoya on the Tosaborigawa River in Kitahama and was moved to Dojima Shinchi in 1697. The Dojima Rice Exchange also appears in Ryotaro Shiba’s novel Niwaka.

The Dojima Rice Exchange was originally located on the streets, and crowds were dispersed by splashing water on them once trading was done for the day! ( It’s time to go home! )
